Chapter 10

“Suzie, are you sure about this?” Paul caught her arm just before she could pull open the door of the office. He met her eyes, his own narrowed. “This isn’t a simple matter, if Donald really was involved. He might suspect why you are really here, why I set up this meeting with his son and insisted that he be there.”

“Yes, I’m sure. I need to find out as much as I can about this situation as fast as I can. It’s okay if they suspect. I’m no threat to him. I’m not the police, I’m not anyone but an interested business person.” Suzie gazed back at him. “Trust me, Paul, I can handle anything that they throw at me.”

“It’s not you that I don’t trust.” Paul pulled open the door, then passed one more look in her direction. “I’ll follow your lead.”

Suzie stepped inside and walked past the empty reception desk. She continued down the hall to the only door, which stood ajar.

“Paul?” Bob stepped into the doorway. “Come in.” He stepped back as Suzie approached. “Oh, I didn’t know that we’d have company.”

“Is your father here?” Suzie continued on into the office and noticed an older man seated behind the desk. “Donald?”

“That’s me.” Donald stood up from his chair and offered his hand to Suzie. “And you are?”

“My name is Suzie.” She shook his hand and smiled at him. “Thanks for agreeing to this meeting.”

“When I agreed to this meeting, it was with Paul.” Donald’s gaze passed over his son and settled on Paul. “Somehow, I think this meeting isn’t about a business deal between us.”

“I did call the meeting to discuss something.” Paul held out his hand towards Suzie. “At her request.”

“What is this nonsense?” Bob frowned as he looked between both of them. “I came here to make a deal.”

“I came here to ask you a few questions. I hope you don’t mind.” Suzie sat down in a chair in front of the desk. “I’m not sure if you have heard the rumors.”

“About Jimmy Tomson?” Donald lifted his chin, then nodded. “I’ve heard them.”

“She’s the one that owns Dune House, Dad.” Bob leaned against the desk not far from Suzie’s chair. “You’re the one that found Jimmy, aren’t you?”

“Not just me, but yes.” Suzie sat forward in her chair as Paul stepped up beside her. “I’m very sorry for your loss. I’m sure that you didn’t expect this.” She locked her eyes to Donald’s.

“I didn’t expect that he would be in the mine, no.” Donald narrowed his eyes. “But I knew it would only be a matter of time before he got himself into some kind of trouble.”

“You did?” Suzie raised an eyebrow. “What made you think that?”

“He was always on someone’s bad side. If it wasn’t the workers, it was someone else.” Donald shook his head, then folded his hands on top of the desk. “He was a good worker, I’m not saying that he wasn’t, but he got people riled up very easily. I had to show up there once when the workers threatened to revolt if he wasn’t fired.
